Temperament and Timing
An astrological study of your creative disposition and the rhythms of the year ahead
You can love your work, be willing to practise, and still struggle to give your creativity the conditions it needs.
Perhaps you keep planning projects around a pace you can sustain for a fortnight, then spend the following month recovering. Perhaps you need considerable time to absorb what you’re learning before you can do anything interesting with it, yet keep treating that interval as wasted time. Or your usual way of working has become strangely difficult, and you’re trying to understand what needs to change.
Temperament and Timing is a personalized written report exploring your underlying creative constitution and how it is being modified over the next twelve months.
Through traditional astrology, we look at the pace, working conditions, and patterns of replenishment that support your practice—and how to make useful adjustments as the year unfolds.
A practical reference for the work you want to make, and the life in which you’re making it.

Give your ambitions a workable shape
A creative practice involves decisions about how to spend your time long before you sit down to make something.
How much preparation does a project need? How much activity can you sustain? When would it help to stretch yourself, and when would more pressure simply make the work harder?
These decisions accumulate. They shape what you finish, what you learn, and whether you have enough left in you to return.
We often make them according to an imagined version of ourselves: someone who learns faster, needs less quiet, produces more steadily, or can move directly from an exciting idea into its execution.
Meanwhile, the actual conditions under which our best work develops remain poorly understood.
Temperament offers a way to investigate those conditions. It helps us recognize the tendencies we repeatedly bring to our work, including the strengths we can cultivate and the excesses that make those same strengths difficult to sustain.
With that understanding, we can make more deliberate choices that help us sustain a practice. We can give preparation enough room without allowing it to consume the whole project. We can use a period of increased activity without assuming that its pace must (or will) become our permanent standard.
We can begin to plan for the person who will actually be doing the work. And we can give ourselves more compassion and understanding about what we can reasonably sustain at this time.
What is temperament?
In traditional astrology, temperament describes your underlying constitution that is expressed through your disposition. You may already know the names associated with these mixtures: choleric, melancholic, sanguine, and phlegmatic.
Most people contain a mixture, with some qualities more pronounced than others. The chemistry of these different types makes a huge difference in how we show up in our creative lives.
Applied to creative practice, temperament helps us understand tendencies in your pace and engagement. This can include how readily you move into activity, how long you need to absorb an experience, how easily you change direction, and how persistently you remain with something once it has taken hold.
A tendency toward sustained concentration, for example, can support demanding study and careful work. It can also make it difficult to leave something alone when further effort has stopped being useful. Readiness to experiment and explore can open unexpected possibilities while making it harder to stay with one long enough to develop it. Ambitions can help us move toward our desires, and they can also crush us if they are dogmatic or ill-timed.
The value lies in understanding how your disposition behaves in practice, so you can work with it more intelligently.
Your report brings the astrological assessment into conversation with your actual creative life: what you make, how you currently work, where you encounter difficulty, and what you want to develop.
Your nature has seasons
Your underlying temperament provides a foundation. Each year introduces a different mixture of conditions.
One year you might find yourself more inclined toward action and experimentation than usual. In another year you might need longer periods of observation, study, or imaginative replenishment. An ordinarily manageable pace may become demanding; something you once struggled to initiate may become easier to approach.
Understanding these seasonal fluctuations helps you set reasonable expectations for your creative practice in a given time period.
Using your solar return and monthly-return charts, I examine how the coming twelve months modify your natal temperament, then interpret those changes in relation to your creative practice.
This gives us a more useful question than simply asking whether a year will be “good for creativity”:
How can I harness the cycle of fluctuating conditions to support my creative process in realistic ways so I can make thoughtful use of the time available to me?
That might mean allowing more room for technical training, choosing a period for concentrated experimentation, or adjusting a project’s pace to accommodate a greater need for reflection.
The aim is to help you allocate your time and energy with a clearer understanding of both your enduring core nature and the way it cyclically fluctuates on a seasonal basis.

What your report includes
- Your underlying creative disposition: An assessment of your natal temperament, explaining its mixture and what it suggests about your natural pace, habitual tendencies, and the conditions that help sustain your work. We look at how those tendencies become useful strengths, where they can become excessive, and what kinds of adjustment may help restore a more workable balance.
- The next twelve months: An examination of the year’s temperament through your solar return, with monthly changes that help clarify its unfolding rhythm. This section considers how the changing qualities of the year interact with your own constitution, and what that may mean for the demands you place on your practice.
- Practical guidance for your work: The interpretation is grounded in your questionnaire and creative circumstances. You will receive suggestions for pacing your work, making room for different stages of a project, and responding to periods that call for a different approach. The report is designed to be kept nearby and worked from: something you can consult while planning, then revisit alongside your experience as the year progresses.
How is this different from the Creative Court Report?
The Creative Court Report examines the individual planetary faculties involved in making: what each contributes, what each needs, and how they cooperate.
Temperament and Timing examines your overall constitution and the conditions under which your creative activity can flourish.
In my own practice, for instance, the relationship between my Mercury and Mars in my Creative Court helps explain why hands-on experimentation (and sometimes disturbing or dismantling what I’ve made) is essential to discovering something new.
My temperament helps explain why I need considerable space to absorb and contemplate and reach clarity, before I feel able to act upon that experimentation. If I rush past that preparation, I rarely get around to feeling confident enough to experimenting and making those hands-on creative discoveries at all.
Both perspectives are useful, but they answer different questions.
Temperament and Timing also follows the changing conditions of the year ahead.
Please note: you can commission the Temperament and Timing report independently. It’s not required to have a Creative Court Report beforehand.
